We built this arbor in the spring of 1999. During that summer, it kept my office very cool and I didn't need any type of air conditioning or fans. The intent was to cover it with clematis and roses. On the left side, I planted a white rose and dark purple clematis. On the right side, I planted a pink rose and a lighter purple clematis. On both sides, I planted scarlet runner beans to cover the arbor in a hurry. I also planted various plants that would not get very big, but would fall softly over the brick border. In the spring of 2000, Heather loaned us a large pot to use for a fountain. We will take good care of the fountain until such time as Heather gets her own place and has somewhere to put the pot. In the meantime, we will put in lots of cool plants and some little fish.
When you walk out the patio door, this is what you see of the arbor. It is attached to the house on the left (north) side. These two pictures were taken in June.
When you walk around to the front of the arbor, you can see the deep beds (that Bryon and I built) bordered with brick. Those are fushia baskets hanging. The big pot is behind the right side trellis.
